What is Suzuki Piano?

Suzuki is a method of music learning created by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki in the mid-20th century. It is based around the “mother-tongue” approach, which is the idea that children learn to speak their native language by hearing and imitating others, and that music can be learned in a similar fashion. How does Suzuki differ from Traditional piano methods?

In a traditional piano method, students will usually practice reading music from the beginning of study. In Suzuki, learning pieces by ear is stressed more at the beginning and reading is delayed. This allows more time to focus on ear-training and physical technique. Also, in traditional lessons, it varies as to whether parents attend lessons, but Suzuki parents are required to attend lessons.

At what age can my child start lessons?

Children can begin Suzuki lessons earlier than they would begin traditional lessons because of the delayed reading approach. In general, the ideal age for a Suzuki student to begin lessons is 4-6 years. Younger students may start, but this should be discussed on a case-by-case basis. Older students of any age may start as well.
